Copper Foil Enamelling with Maureen Carswell

Christopher Bull

As one of the fortunate members who responded with haste when the. AGM bumph arrived, I now find myself 'volunteering' to write up an account of a wonderful eight hours of teaching by the masterly and ubiquitous Maureen Carswell.

2001Autumn CopperF 5

Eleven of us were gathered round to look at Maureen's first 'thumb pot', made by squashing a piece of copper foil round her thumb and enamelling while idling away in America.

Of course this was not the only piece presented, most of which were created with some new development evolved from observing others and from her visit to China (see the Guild of Enamellers Journal Spring 2000). Also while in China she noticed that the glue used was from some sort of heart medicine. Naturally, she came away with some, a whole bag of it, offering some to the class with the warning that ingesting it could be fatal. A book by June Schwartz "Forty Years and Forty Pieces" was also recommended. *

2001Autumn CopperF 1

Eager to get on, many made use of her 20ft roll of Edwards of Birmingham 5thou. copper foil, cutting it with even children's scissors to begin bending.
