Making a simple kiln

Making a simple kiln using tin cans, fire bricks, fireproof board, ceramic fiber and a torch. Only something to consider if it can be set up outside - or possibly in a suitable workshop.

Sgraffito

Ray Lloyd demonstrates simple sgraffito through sifted enamel. Dorothy Cockrell and Lesley Miller then show how to achieve finer lines using sgraffito through liquid enamel. There is also a brief demonstration of how to wet lay enamel.

Sifting and firing enamel

Dorothy Cockrell demonstrates basic sifting techniques with many helpful tips - eg enamel should not be more than the thickness of the metal and should be even, two thin layers are better than one thick one and many more. There is also a brief introduction to firescale and to counter enamelling.

Swirling

Swirling (sometimes called scrolling) is a technique in which enamel is hot enamel is moved around in the kiln using a special tool. Expertly demonstrated by Kathleen Kay.

Wire inlay and drawing

Demonstrations of two very useful techniques for decorating an enamel surface. Wire is laid into enamel and fired to form an outline pattern which can then filled with other shades of enamel.
