Lesley Miller
Some of you may have seen Victoria Miller's enamel pictures of Gustav Klimt's "Water Serpents", together with her portfolio of preparatory tests. Since many of the colours and effects are similar to those in the "The Kiss", it may be helpful if I summarise the more relevant ones here.
Most of the enamels she used were in the Soyer range from Camden Workshops and the underglazes and painting enamels were also from Camden. She also used Ball's liquid flux in a dry powder form, which was mixed with water as needed. I expect that this is very similar to the present flux, which I believe is supplied in liquid form. The techniques used were sifted enamel, wet and dry stencils, sgraffito, painting and the application of foils, wires and lumps. Some enamels, mainly the opalescents, were graded by sieving through fine mesh to give a smoother, less grainy finish.
