Region 3 and 4 Model Workshop with Jill Leventon
Ann Jones
On a very cold, frosty day in January, 10 members of our region ventured out to meet at The Raven Studios in Shrewsbury, to attend a Modelling Workshop with Jill Leventon. One big advantage of our day was being in the small hall, which was very cosy, although running to the upstairs loo took courage.
Jill explained to us that there were lots of design books available for making models or you could you use your imagination and design your own template. Showing us some of her own designs and models Jill explained that the material needed for most models was 5 thou (0.127mm), but for more rigidity 10 thou (0.25mm). Although for many of the models 0.5mm copper is ideal and can be cut with a piercing saw (the dog would be a good example).
Exploring Jill’s books most of the group decided to tackle an already tried and tested design. Normally a very chatty group, the room was particularly quiet as everyone focussed on tracing or cutting their design. When copying our designs from the tracing paper to copper, we used embossing tools, or any sharp pointed tool, then sharp scissors to cut out design. One word of warning, shim can have very sharp edges, so be aware of cutting your fingers!
