Cathy Timbrell

I had always wanted to know how Janine produced such clean, fine stencilled pictures with the subtle white and turquoise shadings – and her workshop did not disappoint!

Janine showed us some beautiful examples of her work (one came home with me!) and showed us how to plan our stencil cutting so that we could do more additions of enamel onto the same piece. The stencils were cut into 180gsm weight paper (which is rigid enough not to bend), using a fine scalpel and cutting board. The stencils were cut slightly larger (2mm) than the copper to be stencilled, with a 1cm border around so “island” pieces didn’t fall out of the stencil! To make a second stencil for two applications of enamel in different places we were shown how to use good old fashioned carbon paper to transfer the first image to the second stencil – or you could print two copies (or more) of the original design. Janine also suggested using a registration mark on the second stencil. Small separate masking pieces can be put on with blue tack stuck to a small screw and mistakes repaired on the back with masking tape!
