Imogen Hales - Bursary Winner 2025
Imogen is in her final year at The Glasgow School of Art. She wishes to draw on her background in painting and printmaking and to explore materials and processes that best convey the qualities of her work; with enamelling being fundamental to this venture while improving the quality of her craftsmanship.
These are the pieces Imogen submitted for the Bursary Award:
- Brooch
From a series of 'Garland' brooches inspired by rural craft heritage and landscape. The brooch is made by enamelling wire that is forged and braided using a traditional milliners' straw plaiting technique. First a base layer of wet process enamel is applied, before several layers of vitreous enamel in shades of green are sifted and wet packed. Short lengths of gold wire are fused to the surface, which is rubbed back to a flat, matt finish. Small areas of the brooch are completely transparent, as the perforations in the wire 'sheet' act like cells, allowing for a plique à jour effect.
Main Techniques: Embedding and decorative media, Plique à Jour, Wet process,
Main base material: Sterling silver.
