Heather Larson

I was very fortunate this year to have been on Alexandra Raphael's workshop, where she taught us her method for incorporating gemstones with enamel. I've wanted to try this for some time, and I was very pleased to learn how to do it in a way that minimises enamelling problems later. To help us understand the process, Alexandra brought with her a few examples of her own unfinished work.

Alexandra first asked us to each make a bezel to fit the gemstone we had brought with us. We made the bezels from fine silver and soldered the joins with IT solder, which has a higher melting point than hard solder so that it is better able to withstand multiple firings. We used IT solder throughout the process.
