I was excited to attend this workshop since I have been aware that I needed to learn how to ‘up my game’ with fastenings. I had no idea that I would encounter such beauty and complexity! We were introduced to annular and penannular brooches and Sarah showed how they worked. It turned out to be quite simple whilst remaining magic to look at. Sarah has some stunning examples of these brooches where the fastening is at least as important as the decoration.

We started with making rivets and using the fantastic bow drill (easy when you get the knack – think yo-yo) and the philosophical Archimedes drill. A pretty looking device. Both of these performed better in a practised hand!
