More New Shimmers
Dorothy Cockrell
After Conference 2024, David Bainbridge gave me a set of newly developed shimmer enamels “to play with”. This is code for “try them out and report back”. They are not yet on sale, so carry numbers beginning with T.
As before, I tried them on white, flux and black bases, using the same stencil each time. Later in the year, Caroline Taylor came for a visit and spent some time testing them out too.
We found they were not nearly so temperature sensitive as the first ones and were pearly rather than glittery. In general, many were best on a white background, a few were too pale to do much over black, and the warmer shades were good on flux.
Because they can take a higher temperature, those with transparent bases can be fired directly onto copper at a temperature high enough to turn the copper golden without losing their pearly appearance. As warm colours often react with the metal, we gave those a protective undercoat of flux (Soyer 1 copper flux).
