Hand Engraving with Heather Larson - Region 7 Workshop
Carol Saxton
Eighteen of us met at Aylesford Priory, 28th September 2024, mostly being hand engraving novices.
Hand engraving creates a series of shallow angled lines and marks, giving facets which glint through the enamel. Heather showed us several stunningly engraved silver pieces. She explained the different profiles of gravers - square, flat, rounded and the size range from 2mm to 24mm. Later, she shared a video of making up a graver and showed us how to sharpen a graver.
The graver length is vital to comfort and accuracy. We had measured from the tip of the index finger to base of the little finger and Heather had kindly tailor-made our gravers, which we could buy.
