I knew from the start I wanted to depict the Viking boats in some form or other because they are what I like about the Vikings (in fact, it is the only thing I like about them). I worked on a piece with boat in full sail, cutting through the waves, etc. which was OK but not especially interesting. I then came across a cartoon drawing of some Vikings and decided to do something similar, making them larger and out of scale with their boat, so that they became the main subject. I liked the fact that they look out across the oars of a nearby boat which has come much too close, and these doughty characters look very scared. This seemed more fun to work on.
