In her introduction, Jane showed examples of her distinctive style of enamelled silver jewellery. From her own designs, drawn on the computer, the artwork is sent to a specialist company, (Chempix), for multiple photo-etching on sterling silver sheet. After sawing out the individual pieces, Jane then fills in the recessed areas of the design with enamel to produce beautiful pieces for sale as pendants or ear rings.
More recently, Jane has developed an interest in the use of enamel transfers that are also applied to photo etched pieces, (round, oval etc), In this technique, a 1.3mm thick silver blank is etched to a uniform depth of 0.3mm apart from leaving a retaining edge. After much intensive research into the design and application of enamel transfers, she is able to create fine, intricate patterns that are laid on a base coat of pre-fired enamel and then re-fired to produce the final piece. The surrounding silver edge is often chemically oxidized by Jane and this adds a touch of 1950’ nostalgia. It is this technique of using enamel transfers that formed the basis of the workshop.
