Many years ago I bought a small jar of ‘crackle enamel’ for which I had GREAT PLANS…Alas, the plans never came off the ground for whatever I tried, there were no crackles. The man in the art shop where I had bought my little jar was not very helpful; he just observed that I must have done SOMETHING wrong…

Later, I realized that getting crackles depends on the use of two layers of enamels which have different coefficients of expansion. But which enamels to use?

For a while, I worked with a basecoat of jewellery enamels and a top coat of glass paint. This sometimes worked, but more often it did not. Then I found not only the Thompson Enamels, but also the answer to my question which enamels to use…

In case you too are trying to get good crackles, here is the description of the procedure which you may follow to get them.

Mind you, although this procedure is not really difficult and I shall tell you in this article which enamels to use, you will need a lot of patience to find out for yourself how much of these enamels you should apply to get the results you are after. But don’t despair… the extra work will be well worth your time.
