Penny Gildea’s Workshop at Leicester April 2008
This method of etching is a development of one described in an earlier issue of the journal (Spring 2003) which gave instructions for building your own electric etching kit. Penny has taken this a stage further and uses an ordinary battery charger, such as one can buy in Halfords or any electrical supplier, 6 volts is all the strength that is needed.
Although nitric acid is used, the solution is 950 ml water to 50ml nitric acid (1-20) - much more dilute and therefore safer than the traditional 1-7 (or stronger). At this dilution there is much less chance of undercutting the resist.
In addition to being safer, this method is also very much faster than normal etching, timing being in minutes or seconds rather than hours.
