The description given for Ruth's workshop detailed the cloisonné techniques to be demonstrated, but gave no idea of the breadth of her technical repertoire to be shown in an exciting and most inspiring day. Despite travelling by train with a fairly reasonable suitcase, Ruth produced a cornucopia of tools, materials and a dazzling array of samples.
She started us off with preparing the metal (emery, pickle, glass brush) with a sifted base of flux. However, then she brought out stencils for sifting through, stamps and painting enamels, foils & leaf in gold and silver, and showed us how to embellish the base in various layers. Samples on copper and silver were used to show the various techniques, opening up a wide range of design starting points. The participants were prepared for a day of experimentation and play, and a good range of pieces were soon being fired.
