Janet based this workshop on Ellen Goldman's very successful one at Keele in April 2005. Ellen very kindly gave permission for her notes to be reproduced and also sent an email with details of how to buy the lustres.
After following Ellen and Janet's instructions to the letter and making samples, we began to experiment. We found that firing temperature is not as critical as we had been led to believe. The lustre will disappear if it gets too hot for too long, but a high temperature for a shorter time can be used successfully. Second layers can be applied and seem to stick to any grains of enamel that have not been totally covered the first time.
Lynne used it very thinly and fired several times up to 780°C to get a smoother glossier appearance. Margaret tried swirls of silver and dots of gold over a light coloured background, the result looked most expensive! Gerry applied silver and gold lustres with opal white enamel over a black background with equally fetching effects.
