When firing any piece that is likely to produce black copper oxide (firescale), keep a tin handy and when the piece has been fired and removed from the kiln, lower it (and the trivet if you wish) into the tin and put on the lid. Leave until the piece has cooled when you can vacuum up the black flakes etc and put your piece in the pickle or work on it as required. In this way it is possible to keep your kiln area clean and hopefully no black specks will be floating about to ruin your work.
