Epson has recently started to retail a mid priced (£99) InkJet printer (R200) which has the ability to print images directly onto the face of a CD. I have carried out a "Heath Robinson" modification to a carriage which feeds the CD's into the printer to allow enamel blanks to be input. The modifications merely require the fretting of a window in a CD to hold a work piece, and putting of a few pieces of double sided tape on the carriage to stop the work piece moving when under the printer rollers. After only a few trials, it is clear that Direct InkJet Enamelling opens up some interesting possibilities for the enameller. My own interest in Direct InkJet Enamelling is in producing line images in enamel derived from digital images, sometimes using images produced by others, such as those of Westminster Abbey, but also my own artwork as illustrated by the heads of two friends. The technique is ideally suited to providing an outline to start an enamel painting, or to adding a caption or signature to a piece of work.
