JANE SHORT'S WORKSHOP AT YORK - April 2003
Florentina Nichols
It was my great pleasure to attend the Guild of Enamellers Conference at York in April of 2003. Jane Short, whose work I greatly admire, was giving a workshop there and I was able to participate. The following are my notes from the workshop. Perhaps they will be of some use to other members of the Guild
THE WORKSHOP: Setting gravers and Starting Champlevé
Before you can begin to carve metal you must set it up on a block of wood. Select a piece of wood, which is comfortable in your hand, about 3" or so. You need to be able to hold and turn the wood easily in your hand. The piece of metal that you select must fit the size of the wood. For example, a small piece of metal can be set up on a piece of dowel. Melt setters wax onto the wood and allow it to cool. Then heat your piece of metal and put it down on the wax. Do not put cold metal on hot wax! The hot metal will melt into wax with just a bit going over the edge to hold it in place.
