Recently my enamelling has been stricken by an evil gremlin manifesting itself by blowing holes in the enamel during firing. Significantly not all colours were affected. All possible sources of contamination were checked and it was concluded that the most likely source of the trouble was incompatibility of certain colours with the undercoat. On this premise work was blithely continued anew - disaster again struck!

Obviously something serious was occurring and on deliberate concentration it was felt that a gas was being liberated during firing and causing the formation of holes as many of the latter were round and smooth edged.

Suspicion pointed to a marble pestle and mortar, which was being used after the loss of my old pestle and mortar during a clear out and reorganisation of my workshop. I must point out here that most of my enamelling tackle is now boxed and held in container boxes.
