The design should have a fair amount of contrast in order to accentuate the monochrome relief. The copper is prepared and two coats of transparent colour are applied. Then the piece is counter-enamelled. Black was not her first choice of colour, she preferred smoky blue grey, mazarine blue with a darker colour for the second layer, ebony, smoky grey or any appropriate dark colour.
