Based on the results and conclusions of the Region 1 experimental workshop, October 2002.

The aim of this workshop was to test as many different resists as possible with 3 etchants for copper:

  • Nitric Acid – 25% to 75% water

  • Ferric Chloride - 1 part ferric chloride to 3 of water

  • Hydrochloric Acid plus Hydrogen Peroxide – 25% hydrochloric acid to 75% hydrogen peroxide.

The etching solutions were put into tall narrow plastic containers (sold for storing breakfast cereals), set in boxes of sand to prevent them being knocked over and to absorb any drips. As we had no fume cupboard, the nitric acid and ferric chloride containers were placed under an open window; but the hydrochloric acid was put outside in the open air, as it gave off much stronger and more dangerous fumes.
