Having read the following article in 'Glass on Metal' and become curious to see what it was all about; I obtained some separation enamel from Thompsons and tried a few experiments based on Tom Ellis's instructions.

As Thompsons sell only lead-free enamels, I tried the separation enamel on these first. Later, knowing perfectly well that one cannot mix leaded and unleaded enamels, I tried it on leaded enamels too. It worked!

Tom really means it when he advises thin coats of enamel; the best results came from pale opaques under darker transparents - one coat of each, also transparents on clear flux or straight on copper.
