STANDARDS. Even beginners can give their work a professional touch by ensuring that the standard of enamelling and finishing is really good. Make sure that the finished piece, however simple, is as flawless as you can achieve. Then, once you have mastered the basics, you can use controlled 'flaws' and the idiosyncrasies of enamelling to your advantage and the overall artistic effect.

There are times when every enameller finds that things are going wrong or the results are unexpected - and quite frequently too! Do not be discouraged and be prepared to see if you can turn your 'failures' into 'successes', albeit of an altered design. It takes experience to foresee what will happen, how to achieve what is wanted and to estimate the chances of a further firing improving or even destroying a problem piece.
