Problems with Brooch Pins
The Editor
A cry for help from SHEENA MURRAY (Region 6) who wants to know what metal to use for stronger brooch pins.
She writes:-
“I have found in the past that sterling silver, even when twisted, is too soft and progressed to hardened silver pin wire. However, while this is suitable for small brooches with shorter pins, the wire still seems too soft for longer brooches if a good ‘spring’ is to be obtained when opening the catch. I have been advised to use nickel, or German Silver, as it is sometimes known. Of course, this makes the brooch pin a slightly different colour from the brooch itself.”
