One of the most striking exhibits at the 1991 Selection and Conference at York, was the cloisonné bowl, “Marijke” submitted by our one and only overseas Australian member, Allan Heywood. The bowl was so beautifully worked on both sides, that it was decided to use photos of both sides in this Journal.

Allan is 46 and was born and brought up in Carlton, Melbourne. Now living in Skipton, Victoria, he is married to Marijke, who is of Dutch origin, and they have two children, Katherine (6) and Christopher (3).

Allan says he had no background training in Arts and Crafts, apart from six years part-time work in a custom stainless steel fabricating business. This was concerned with forming, grinding and polishing stainless steel sinks, tables, medical equipment and the like. He completed 4 years of an Applied Chemistry Diploma, and failed on the 5th. He served 2 years with the Australian Corps of Engineers, and this included a year in South Vietnam. He then spent 7 years with Ford Australia in their quality control laboratory, and then on their Manufacturing Engineering Department as a paints’ processor. Here he worked with paints, sealers, adhesives, abrasives, and other non-metallic materials.
