Region 3 and 4 had an inspiring and most helpful workshop led by Harriet St Leger on 19th October. The subject was ‘Designing for stencils in enamelling”.

Harriet started with describing and showing us her collection of images that inspire her and inform how she chooses her colour ways. She showed us her work where she uses stencils and described how she would break down an image into different shapes, each shape representing an individual colour.

We were asked to choose an image to work with and shown how to use “frames” to place over different aspects of our image until we found an area to focus on. This would become the image for the stencil. This image can be enlarged or used as it is. Harriet showed us how to notice the different colour shapes within the frame.

Using tracing paper, we traced each colour shape using a very fine liner in a way that when each one is transposed onto card and cut out, they represent the different layers for the stencil. For example, an image with 3 colours will require 3 stencils, one for each colour.
