Beyond these walls
Kathleen Kay
Have you ever been so inspired by a place or view that its visual memory remains, constantly waiting to be let loose for others to share?
It was several years ago, during a brief holiday on the Isle of Mull, that we enjoyed a day on the tiny island of Iona. We had a mix of light cloud and brilliant Iona sunshine, with lighting effects I will remember forever. I came away with memories safely stored for lots of masterpieces that I will do one day.

But, reality - one constant vision I hold dear is of the Nunnery ruins, the mix of stones with mosses, and with wild flowers clinging in the crevices. Over the low, broken wall was another wall, with a window arch revealing the view beyond. I hadn't then a digital camera in my lap pouch and the day was too precious and short to stop and sketch, so it wasn't till evening, back at the B&B, when a few pencil strokes in my mini notebook were to be a constant reminder of one day. Over the years I had intended to do the whole vision in enamels, working the stone wall in sections using raised areas of foil. Various textures would include real lona sand, embedded in underfired grains of enamel. OK, I hadn't done it yet - but one day.
