Starting pointers for design resource and source play

Kathleen Kay

Design resources can be found everywhere, but the most important single resource is your own ability to see design potential all around you. The garden reveals patterns in paving, trellis, brickwork, petals, seedheads and leaves. Texture can be sought in bark, mosses, feathers, wood, gravel. Magnification of seedheads, lichens, stamens, insects, snowflakes etc., can open up a new world of inspiration. The structure revealed in freshly sliced cabbage, cucumber, peppers or oranges can trigger an idea in the midst of lunch preparation. Training your mind to be receptive to patterns, textures, colours, lines and shapes will build up your mental visual library, to be plundered when the need arises.
