Another Big Picture Using a Little Kiln
Kathleen Kay
One of -the favourite projects of my special needs students is a fish, made up from small segments. Over the years we have made several, each one different in colouring and decoration. The original pattern was not mine. I had it from Evelyn Beard, a previous treasurer and Craftsman of the Guild. I believe she saw it in a magazine and had a go at it herself.
The project is ideal for anyone who is restricted by kiln size, as each piece is no bigger than 3" and it all comes out of a 6" square (or 4x3" squares). It is easy to draw, using a rule and compass, and cutting out the copper shapes can be carefully done with sharp jewellery shears. If you need new ones Walsh recommend TJ 262 jeweller’s curved shears or TJ 261 straight shears. For anyone preferring practice with a jeweller's piercing saw and a bench peg this would be a good pattern to start on.
