We eagerly arrived at Amanda’s workshop each armed with various pieces of steel ranging from pizza pans to cut pieces in a variety of gauges. Waiting for us was a wonderful array of samples.

Amanda explained how she came to enamelling from a fine art background. This is evident when you look at her Instagram feed which is full of overlooked urban inspiration for mark-making such as manhole covers, road markings and bridges.

We prepared our steel by using coarse 40/60 grit sandpaper but you could use a bench grinder, or sandblast if you have the equipment. Amanda was very particular about wearing masks when we were doing any activity which caused dust and this served as a good reminder to review health and safety in our own workshops.
