Looking back over years of teaching simple enamelling techniques to children aged 8 and over, teenagers with special needs, adult education classes and one day workshops, one of the favourite introductory techniques was stencilling, using commercially made metal stencils. By building up a background of sifted colours and finally sifting a stencilled motif, the recognisable, pleasing result gave a feeling of real achievement plus the enthusiasm to quickly start another one. My collection of stencils includes a wide variety of flowers, leaves and snowflakes, dolphins, angel fish, celtic patterns, a witch on a broomstick and a very popular cat. Mainly bought from Hobbycraft exhibitions these are the thin metal ones: slightly flexible, sturdy but with fine detail, even on the tiny ones. I have been known to cut a large one into two, e.g. the roses shown here.
