Preparation of the copper plaque for painting is by coating the top and counter sides with two or three separately fired, thin layers of a suitable white [or ivory for softer colour effects] enamel.
Fix the plaque into a flat pad of plasticine for ease of handling during painting. Transfer to metal trivet for each firing.
The painting pigments used in the class were applied as overglazes - which do not need a final clear enamel coating, only if carefully handled. To give protection and acid resistance to the image, a coating of clear enamel is needed, in the technique known as fluxing. The painting colours are bought ready ground, as fine as talcum powder. Each colour is prepared with Glycerol as the painting medium, on a smooth glass surface, preferably with a glass muller, otherwise with a spatula. Paints can be prepared in advance and kept fresh if covered with an airtight lid.
