"Take a dead blow hammer (a rubber mallet filled with lead shot) and a partner, then go and hammer the daylights out of a piece of 36 gauge soft copper over interesting surfaces anywhere on the campus".
Steve Artz knew exactly how to integrate his students and get them started on their projects within minutes of beginning his workshop.
First we had quick, but relevant, safety instructions - the whereabouts of the fire extinguisher, treatment of cuts and burns and the need for eye protection.
With torches there is not so much infra-red as with a kiln, but we were to watch for shards of enamel going 'pop'. He advised that enamellers' most common problem is cataract; to help to avoid this one should stand to the side of a kiln and not look into it directly.
