Close Encounters .......of the Enamelling Kind

"Separation Enamels - Using SE-2" Tutorial with Ellen Goldman

by Hazel Womersley

Ellen Goldman started the morning by saying that she had experimented with separation enamel, SE", and showed us her beautifully notated book of samples - giving the enamels and colours used for each sample, a brief process, ink drawn patterns of the design and pitfalls to avoid. She had a very realistic approach - not displaying some wonderfully finished artefact - but a range of work to act as a source of ideas and techniques so that we could be assured of achieving the best results in the short time available.

Separation enamel alters the viscosity of glass, creating patterns or special effects adding another dimension to enamelling work. Where applied, it creates indentations so that the piece has greater tactile quality. SE-1 was developed for use with leaded enamels, is mixed with oil and takes about 24 hours to dry when applied. SE-2 is for use with unleaded enamels, such as the Thompson range, and is mixed with water and a drop of glue such as Klyr-fire. When applied over other layers of enamel, either in thin lines or as a thin coat for sgraffito work, it dries quickly in a warm place - and so this is what we used.
