Workshop at Arrowmont – October 2001
Eileen Schneegas, A.G.E.
Ricky Frank is first a businessman who has made a success of his enamelling art. Ricky kindly filled in for Marilyn Druin who was ill and found it impossible to attend the conference for the Enamel Society at Arrowmont in Tennessee. Besides the workshop in Cloisonné on fine silver, Ricky headed two 'break-out' sessions during the conference proper. Both breakout sessions concerned the business of art or how to succeed at something you love.
Cloisonné : Ricky uses fine silver in 22 or 24 gauge metal. He also textures the metal before applying any enamel or wires. Texturing can be done using a rolling mill and a piece of patterned brass sheet; using burrs with your pendant drill to apply a surface texture; or even engraving. Done with care, both silver and gold foils can also be roller printed! Best if they are a little thicker than usual and sandwiched between layer of thin paper.
