VIII FEATHERING, SCROLLING OR SWIRLING.

MOLTEN ENAMEL can be manipulated in the kiln with a scrolling tool. This is a long rod with its pointed end turned down so it can be placed into a melted coat of enamel, then moved, displacing the semi-liquid glass. A wooden handle allows it to be held safely, but the radiant heat from the kiln has to be protected against by having a long shaft or wearing heat proof gloves.

FEATHERING is a decorative procedure often used in icing a cake. A sharp point is drawn through parallel lines before the surface solidifies. This causes the lines to be dragged into a feather or fern shape, the stalk being scored by the tool.
