Embarking on an enamel painting tutorial seemed quite daunting as the total number of enamelled pieces I have produced can be counted on one hand! However, everyone in the class was in for a very pleasant surprise as experience didn't seem to matter - go on - have a go!

We all had with us our ready enamelled white blanks - some domed, some flat, some bought and some home produced.

Rita had very kindly produced instruction handouts with lots of tips to help us and had brought along samples of her work, showing the stages of painting portraits, one of which had had twenty firings.

As time was of the essence in this slow and delicate process, we omitted the cleaning of edges between firings and put up with a few splatters of firescale.

Having transferred our outlines using Kodatrace or Transtrace, we were all keen to start painting. Rita uses underglaze powder which she mixes with medium on a thick sheet of glass using an old glass decanter stopper. What a good money saving idea!
