Easter Unveiling
Lesley Miller
About three years ago, I wrote a short piece in the Journal about a commission I had received to make an eight-foot-high enamelled cross for my local church. Well, it is now finished!

Having agreed to write this article, I now realise that it is very difficult to describe to people I cannot see, a cross which they cannot see. Anyway, I'll do my best (the colour print, from a photograph by Chris Buck, should help!).
The church is St. Barnabas Church, Higher Drive, Purley, Surrey. It is a very modern, plain church where all the shapes seem to be rectangular. I decided to follow this theme in my design and ended up with a design which, I think, fits in well with the style of the church.
My main worry, having designed it, was how to make it. Getting a faculty for it (a faculty is a very complicated planning permission required for anything to be fixed up in a church) was the least of my worries, but having to produce a presentation folder for the various committees to examine did help me to clarify my ideas.
