BTEC Higher National Certificate in Applied Arts - Enamelling
Beryl Ball
Having recently given a talk with slides to the Wyvern Enamellers about my personal experience of studying for this Certificate, it was suggested that I wrote a summary of it for the Journal. So here it is, with some colour photographs instead of slides. Maybe it will inspire you to do the Course yourself, although I do not know of any other College that is offering it. I myself attended the School of Art and Design, Filton College, Bristol, alongside two other Guild members, Patricia Davies and Christina Mepham. Fortunately, we all passed. Our tutor was Elizabeth Turrell who many of you will know, especially as she sat on the Guild Selection Committee for 3 years.
The HNC is a 2-year part time vocational course for experienced students who have to submit a portfolio for entrance. It comprises one day a week in the studio, with an additional 5 hours study undertaken at home, although most of us needed or chose to do much more than the required 5 hours. There is a one-week full-time Summer School and the Course ends with an assessment and exhibition.
