A SOFT ENAMEL UNDER A COAT OF HARDER ENAMEL can give spectacular mottled effects. A lower, pre-fired, layer of enamel will re-melt before a harder one subsequently put on top and appear to 'bubble" through it. Try this out with a soft white first firing covered with a relatively thin sprinkling of various other colours. The greater the difference in melting temperature the more likely distinct speckles will appear. The piece will probably need to be given a good firing, and notice how the mottling develops in the kiln, once it has fused and is allowed to continue to heat through.
