Thin copper shim is cut out and pressed into a relief design before enamelling. Pieces can be free standing, mounted, appliqué style, on a stiff background or fused onto a pre-enamelled copper base.

Repoussé pieces need to be carefully designed to accommodate the technique, the copper sheet shaped into its three-dimensional form and the piece enamelled. Because the copper is so thin it will bend easily and the robustness of the work will depend on the enamel coating as much as the metal itself.
