One of the projects set for Nursery Nurse Students at Dudley College, in their brief course on enamelling, is a small, simple piece of Cloisonné. The students have mixed creative abilities, some being very timid in expressing themselves through any form of craftwork. Being guided through uncomplicated enamelling techniques, resulting in satisfying finished pieces, gives them greater confidence and wider interests.

Each of the six classes lasts only ninety minutes, so a few short cuts help the less ambitious student. One of the ways in which I have simplified Cloisonné is to build up a design based on circles, using a circular copper blank, and jump rings in an assortment of sizes 3mm, 4mm,

5mm and 6mm. I have previously checked that the jump rings are fireable, not plated but solid copper, brass or silver.
