Wayback, in the Autumn and Winter Journals of 1994, I suggested a challenge for Guild members to each produce an enamel inspired by a given theme, the finished pieces to be displayed at the 1995 Guild Conference Exhibition in York. The given theme was 'Water': the resultant exhibition was wonderful.

The next year we had the theme 'Fire'; then, for 1997, Judith Harris gave us 'Weather', this was followed by "Spring and so on ...... the annual themed exhibitions were truly a success. It has now become a tradition that the retiring Chairman chooses the theme and this year, for the exhibition of 2009, Carol Griffin has given us 'Texture', one of the most playful inspirations enamellers could be given. Obviously, the enamels can be sophisticated, precious, exquisite and challenging, wonderful masterpieces worked by the Guild's most talented members but, it doesn't necessarily require expertise to have a bit of fun and experiment with texture.
