Surrounded by Summer
Kathleen Kay
In the Summer Journals I try to share ideas that allow you to enjoy the sun in your garden yet inspire you to try something new, arty and relevant to enamelling.
I have recently completed a frame or surround for a panel, as part of my City & Guilds level 3 Design & Craft Course. I wanted the design to reflect my chosen theme and also to be an integral part of the finished work, rather than just a bought frame or simple mount.
My subject is Land/Sea scape using innovative techniques: obviously a time to experiment with materials that I hadn't played with before. My inspiration and research was taken from many close-up photographs of the rocky, fossil rich shoreline between Lyme Regis and Charmouth and from ammonites from Charmouth beach. I am not suggesting my shoreline panel surround is going to inspire you, but you may see possibilities in using similar materials to create your own textures and patterns.

First of all the ammonites; I wanted to use several. I own four tiny ones and one about 21/" across, all too precious to use on the panel but I could see possibilities in making flexible moulds from them in order to produce poly-clay duplicates.
