Betty Butler's workshop at Leicester, April 2004

by Margery Levy

I think none of us really knew what to expect when we signed up for this tutorial. Betty had suggested we bring bits of wood, cork, shells, stone, slate and any other materials which we thought of. So, seaweed, feathers, sand, gravel, beans and chicken bones appeared from various sources.

Betty shared with us her progressive thoughts on constructing a Collage. She thought her best solutions had been when the design was abstract and had not left the backing exposed. She wanted us to design as we went along, without drawing.

Next she demonstrated making units in copper foil (0.005" or 0.006").
