The simple idea of using accurately cut squares to form a mosaic, as in the accompanying diagram, lends itself to several themes for a wall panel, or for the background to a clock movement.

The squares may be cut commercially, or can be marked out accurately and cut with metal shears but, for any mosaic, accurate cutting is essential.

The basic idea is the use of twelve 2" squares arranged around a central 4" square. These 2" squares are the basis for the clock panel, each representing one of its hourly divisions.

 

Any favoured technique can be used in producing the pieces, sgraffito, cloisonné, wire embedding, embedding stamped copper numbers or even - dare I say it - using transfers.
