  • Description of your entry: My recent jewellery work has been influenced by an interest in the Japanese concept of “ma” or the artistic interpretation of negative space, which permeates Japanese culture, both visually and socially; it can refer to a pause in conversation, the gaps between buildings, the negative space between the trees in traditional ink paintings. In ‘Tangle’ the repeating pierced components each relate to one another in slightly different ways, and the piece is constructed in order that they appear to hover over each other, not quite touching. Referencing tangled seaweed washed up on the shoreline, this piece is a celebration of the tranquility of the secluded stretches of the Scottish coast, and aims to embody some of the essence of ‘ma’.
