  • Description of your entry: The stylised hook, or Hei Matau in Maori, is a common and instantly recognisable part of New Zealand visual culture and is often worn as a pendant. As a citizen of both Aotearoa and Britain, I am influenced by the visual language of both countries, and am interested in drawing components from each together. ‘Hook’ takes the stylised form of a Hei Matau and uses enamel in place of paua shell, a material native to New Zealand, but subject to strict catch limits due to its scarcity. Through experimenting with overfiring certain enamels I discovered that the characteristic speckles and blue translucency of paua could be closely replicated, foregoing the need to contribute to an industry plagued by poaching while combining themes and making techniques from my two cultural backgrounds.
