Course description - Enamelling on silver 2019
Student requirements or pre skills: Basic silver jewellery making skills including using a jewellers saw and silver soldering,
Aims and Objectives: To be able to prepare silver and enamels for jewellery making. The aim is to create two small pieces of enamelled silver jewellery.
Description of contents: Students will be introduced to theory of enamelling; recommendations for dimensions of the silver; a short introduction to safety using the kiln and enamels and technique for grinding and washing enamels. They will prepare their first piece of silver for the champleve enamel. There will be a demonstration of how to apply the enamel to the silver, dry and fire it.
On Saturday there will be a short demonstration of cloisonné enamelling and a discussion of how to prepare suitable simple designs. Student will then begin their pieces for champleve and cloisonné. They will continue work on these pieces during Saturday and Sunday with short demonstrations of grinding, polishing and finishing.
Materials we use: Sterling silver sheet and wire. Fine silver wire
